Lighthouse in the Blue Hour
The Tybee Island lighthouse, located on Georgia's Tybee Island, along the Savannah River, is the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia. The lighthouse dates back to 1732 when General James Oglethorpe ordered its construction. The lighthouse was rebuilt four times, as a result of foul weather, erosion, and the Civil War. The current lighthouse was established in 1866 and elevated to 154 feet. The lighthouse was fitted for electricity in 1933 and then automated in 1971. Today the lighthouse is still a functioning lighthouse and has 178 steps to the top.
Lighthouse and its Keepers
The 5 acre lot the Tybee Island lighthouse occupies contains three cottages intended for lighthouse keepers. This image displays two of these cottages on the grounds. The current daymark of the lighthouse (black at the top and bottom, white in the middle) is a result of its 1998 restoration.
