The Chellberg farmhouse of a Swedish immigrant family who lived and worked here for three generations. Anders and Johanna Chellberg, with their young son Charles, made the long journey from Sweden to this country in 1863. Traveling first by boat and then by train, the Chellbergs arrived here four months after their departure from Sweden. After their arrival in northwest Indiana, the Chellbergs became part of a growing Swedish community. (NPS)

Chellberg Farmhouse
Swedish and Northwestern Indiana farmstead. The brick farmhouse was built in 1885 as a replacement for an earlier wood-framed house that was destroyed by fire in December of 1884. The bricks for the new house came from a brickyard in nearby Porter. (NPS)

A Barn on the Farm
In 1869, the Chellbergs purchased 40 acres of land and established their own farm. The barn was built around the same time as the original house structure, anywhere between 1870-1879. 40 additional acres had been added to the farm by 1874. (NPS)

The Florida Tropical House
Inspired by the subtropical climate of southern Florida, Miami architect Robert Law Reed designed this house for the 1933 World's Fair to lure tourists the "Sunshine State. This house was the most expensive and luxurious of the Century of Progress Homes and was designed for people of means who lived life in style. The flamingo pink Art Deco home was also designed to bring the indoors and outdoors together in one place. (NPS)

The Wood Eternal
Designed by Chicago architect Murray D. Hetherington for the 1933 Wold's Fair, the hours demonstrated the the durability and versatility of cypress siding, shakes, structural timbers, walls, flooring, window shades, and furnishings. (NPS)
