    Battery 5

Located in the middle of the American line (along with Battery 6), these batteries never faced a direct attack from the British. However, Batteries 5 and 6 did inflict many of the casualties upon the British during the battle. These batteries were in ideal position to fire on the main British advancing force.

Constructed to honor the American victory at the Battle of New Orleans, as well as Andrew Jackson and his troops. The cornerstone was laid in Jan. 1840, within days after Andrew Jackson visited the field on the 25th anniversary of the battle. The State of Louisiana appropriated funds to purchase the land of the battlefield and build the monument in 1852. Construction began in 1855 and was completed in 1908 after being plagued with funding problems for decades.
